Agentic AI vs chatbots: what is the difference?

A chatbot answers your question and waits. Agentic AI is given a goal, plans the steps, uses tools such as email, files and spreadsheets, checks its work and hands back something finished. Both use the same kind of AI model underneath. The difference is what you let it do.

What that looks like at work

Ask a chatbot for help with a weekly sales report and it will explain how to write one. Give an agent the same job and it opens the spreadsheet, pulls this week’s figures, compares them with last week, writes the summary in your format and drops a draft in your inbox for you to check.

Other everyday examples: researching a list of prospects and filling in a sheet, turning meeting notes into actions and follow-up emails, or sorting a shared inbox by topic and urgency.

When you do not need an agent

If a task happens once, takes five minutes, or needs judgement at every step, a chatbot or doing it yourself is fine. Agents earn their keep on work that repeats, follows a pattern and eats time.

The risks, and how to manage them

  • Mistakes: agents can be confidently wrong. Test them on real examples and keep a person reviewing the output.
  • Access: start with read-only access and drafts, and widen it only when the work is consistently right.
  • Data: use business accounts with data controls switched on, and agree with your IT team what the agent can touch.

How to get started

The quickest way to understand agentic AI is to build one agent around a task from your own job. Our guide on how to build AI agents covers the steps. Or learn it properly, with help, on a Node House agentic AI training cohort. For whole teams, see AI training for employees.
